Saint Éogan, founder of the monastery of Ardstraw, was an Irishman who lived in the sixth century AD and was said to have been taken by pirates to Britain.[1] On obtaining his freedom, he went to study at Candida Casa.

Returning to Ireland, he made a foundation at Kilnamanagh, in the Wicklow hills, but his principal foundation was at Ardstraw (Irish: Ard Sratha), County Tyrone, where he served as bishop until his death.
